In the post-genomic era, understanding the molecular basis of complex biological processes requires both new experimental and conceptual approaches. High-throughput analytical methods provide a comprehensive dissection of the regulatory components acting in a biological process in various cellular and model organisms along the evolutionary scale.

Novel techniques such as single cell or single molecule imaging provide unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution in quantitative analysis. However, new computational, mathematical, engineering and physical approaches, are needed to integrate such wealth of experimental information and develop theoretical models that can accurately describe the design principles of biological systems and predict their behavior in a patho-physio-logical context.

SBMC 2008 will present cuttingedge experimental, theoretical and computational approaches to unravel the design principles underlying a wide range of regulatory processes in mammalian cells, including cell organization, metabolic pathways, genetic and signaling networks, tissue morphogenesis and development, and pathogenetic mechanisms.

The Conference on Systems Biology of Mammalian Cells (SBMC) is organized by HepatoSys, the Federal German research initiative for Systems Biology of hepatocytes.
It will take place at the Kulturpalast Dresden, from May 22 to 24, 2008.

In January 2004, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research started a Systems Biology initiative within the program »Biotechnology - using and shaping its opportunities« focusing on hepatocytes. During the first funding phase (2004-2006) the competence network HepatoSys was established. In the second funding phase (2007-2009) more than thirty research groups from academia, industry, and clinics are working on interdisciplinary research, to establish methods and tools and to develop reality-based models of physiological processes in hepatic cell model systems.

The goal of HepatoSys is to gain a quantitative understanding of the complex and dynamic cellular processes involved in hepatocyte regeneration, detoxification, endocytosis as well as iron regulation. The compound is formed by four interdisciplinary collaborative projects. Platforms for cell biology and modeling were built to deal with general aspects of Systems Biology. Together they form HepatoSys, the nationwide competence network for Systems Biology.

The aim is both to arrive at a holistic understanding of hepatocytes as well as to make the investigated processes accessible in silico.
